Titan Solar, once a leader in sales volume across North Carolina, recently ceased operations, leaving many customers in a difficult situation. Known for its commission-only sales model and reliance on subcontractors for installations, Titan Solar’s abrupt closure raises several concerns for customers currently in the middle of their solar installations.
Impact on Titan Solar Customers in North Carolina
It is hard to see the full picture just yet, but based on what we see now, it is likely many customers in the middle of buying solar from Titan will have issues getting their systems completed. The banks that have financed many of these systems are likely to take a hit financially too. Similar to what we saw when Pink Energy (formerly PowerHome Solar) closed shop, many customers will struggle to get what they bought in a timely manner, if ever.
Southern Energy Management (SEM) is proud to have a diverse business with our energy efficiency services complementing our solar business. The solar business in NC has changed drastically at least 5 times in the 23 years we have been in business in NC. Our combined services have been critical many times.
The Importance of Choosing a Reliable Solar Installer
When selecting a solar installer, it’s crucial to prioritize reliability over cost. In the solar industry, you often get what you pay for. Southern Energy Management (SEM) has weathered the ever-changing landscape of North Carolina’s solar market for 23 years, thanks in part to our diversified business model that includes energy efficiency services alongside solar installations. Our financial stability ensures that we will be here to service your system long after it’s installed.
At SEM, we offer a production guarantee—if your system doesn’t perform as promised, we compensate you for the shortfall. This level of accountability is rare in the industry, especially among companies that rely on commission-only sales teams and subcontractors. Before committing to a solar provider, we recommend checking their team’s credentials on LinkedIn to ensure they have a solid, in-house workforce.
The Future of Solar in North Carolina
In an attempt to make it safer for NC solar customers, SEM has partnered with NCSEA on developing legislation that will require companies selling and installing solar in NC to disclose whether they hire a sales company or use subcontractors for their installs. SEM also believes these two items are corroding the solar industry from the inside. The commission only sales reps will tell customers lots of things that are not true because they only get paid if they close a sale. Subcontractors installing solar have less of an interest in a quality install because they are usually paid by the panel installed. We will know more later this legislative session about how this bill develops.
The SEM Commitment
SEM chooses to uphold B Corp values of doing business that positively impacts people alongside our planet by hiring full-time team members, paying fair wages, and offering health care and 401K benefits. Plus, we’re a 2024 Best Places to Work Award winner!
Our customers value working with a local company that supports North Carolina communities, rather than outsourcing labor overseas. While we may not be the cheapest option, we are confident that we provide the best long-term value for your solar investment.
