Mandatory Tests and Calculations for SC
South Carolina adheres to an amended version of the 2009 IECC and will continue to do so for the foreseeable future. These building codes are mandatory statewide, though enforcement may vary by jurisdiction. Check with your energy rater on what’s needed in your municipality.
1. Duct Blaster Testing (Required for Certificate of Occupancy)
We perform duct leakage testing to provide an energy certificate in the electrical panel (needed for CO). As long as you meet the performance benchmarks mandated by code below.
Post Construction: Total leakage must be under 12 cfm25/100 square feet or 8 cfm25/100 square feet to the outside
Rough-in Testing: Total leakage must be under 6 cfm25/100 square feet. We conduct duct leakage testing to certify energy compliance, which will be noted on the energy certificate in your electrical panel
2. REScheck (Required for Permitting)
Demonstrates that a home meets or exceeds the energy performance requirements of South Carolina’s code. This is often necessary for permitting in various municipalities, especially in homes with spray foam insulation
3. Manual J Load Calculations (Required for Permitting)
Ensures all heating and cooling equipment is sized according to Section M1401.3 of the International Residential Code. This calculation is typically required for permitting in various municipalities.

Optional Testing
Blower Door Testing
Measures the air leakage of the entire home. While optional, this test is recommended for quality assurance and is often used in high-performance home programs like HERS ratings and ENERGY STAR.
If tested, code requires less than or equal to 7 Air Changes per hour (ACH).
