Starrlight Mead is a craft meadery located in Pittsboro, North Carolina. Founded by Ben and Becky Starr, this meadery specializes in creating award-winning meads that showcase both traditional and innovative flavors. They are passionate about reviving the ancient art of mead-making and sharing it with a modern audience.
Mead is one of the oldest known alcoholic beverages, often referred to as “honey wine.” It’s made by fermenting honey with water, and sometimes fruits, spices, grains, or hops are added to create different flavors. The result is a drink that can range from sweet to dry, and still to sparkling. Mead has a rich history dating back to the Egyptians and has been associated with Vikings, medieval castles & Renaissance Faires.
As of 2024, Starrlight Mead is now powered by the sun.
The 9.72 kW solar system features 24 solar panels that create enough energy each year to offset the following equivalencies:
Offset the equivalent carbon sequestered by 10 acres of forest in one year.
Offset 22,310 miles driven by an average gas powered car each year.
Keep 19,232 pounds of carbon out of the atmosphere every year.
To celebrate their leap into solar-powered sustainability, Starrlight Mead hosted a ribbon-cutting ceremony at their annual MeadFest—a joyous celebration of all things mead! It’s their fun excuse for a mini-Renaissance faire where you can drink mead, learn how to make mead, and revel in medieval merriment.
We’re delighted to have been part of Starrlight Mead’s journey toward sustainability. If you find yourself in Pittsboro, drop by their mead hall to raise a glass to clean energy!
