Walking the Talk: Offsetting Our Carbon Emissions

In This Article

As a certified B Corp, we’re held to high standards for environmental responsibility, and we’re proud to live up to them.

SEM Offsets Carbon Emissions

At Southern Energy Management (SEM), we’re always working to make the world a little brighter and a lot more sustainable, not just for our customers, partners, and community, but also in how we operate behind the scenes.

We’re excited to share that we’ve offset 100% of our operational carbon emissions for the year prior through verified, high-impact carbon offset projects. This action supports our ongoing mission to build a cleaner, more resilient energy future.

What This Means

We’ve purchased offsets covering 630 tonnes of CO₂e, which effectively neutralizes our direct business emissions for the year. This step supports our goal to operate as a net-zero emissions business and demonstrates the kind of leadership we believe the clean energy industry (and the world) needs.

It’s one more way we’re embodying the values behind our B Corp Certification, where accountability and sustainability are more than buzzwords, they’re part of the job.

The Projects Behind the Offset

To walk the talk on sustainability, we chose three high-impact, verified* carbon offset projects that align with our values at Southern Energy Management — clean energy, environmental justice, community resilience, and thoughtful innovation.

These aren’t just paper credits. Each one represents a real-world solution that cuts emissions and supports the communities most affected by climate change.

*All of these projects are independently verified through reputable registries like Gold Standard and Verra, ensuring transparency and trust.

1. From Methane to Megawatts: Istanbul Landfill Gas to Electricity Project – Turkey

One of the largest landfill gas projects in the world, this initiative captures methane from Istanbul’s municipal landfills and turns it into clean electricity for the local grid.

  • Climate Win: Over 8.6 million tonnes of CO₂ already reduced, with millions more projected
  • Energy Win: Powers up to 500,000 homes while displacing fossil fuels
  • Community Win: Creates local jobs, reduces landfill fire risks, and improves air quality

Why we love it: It’s circular economy in action — using waste to generate renewable power and make cities safer, cleaner, and more self-sufficient.

2. Protecting Peatlands & People: Katingan Mentaya Forest Conservation Project – Central Kalimantan

This forest protection and community development project safeguards 157,000 hectares of tropical peatland—one of Earth’s most powerful carbon sinks.

  • Climate Win: Prevents 7.5 million tonnes of CO₂e emissions annually
  • Biodiversity Win: Habitat for endangered species like the Bornean orangutan and clouded leopard
  • Community Win: Partners with 35 villages and 43,000+ people to support health, education, and low-impact livelihoods like honey production and coconut sugar

Why we love it: This project shows what regenerative climate action really looks like — protecting ecosystems, empowering people, and preserving biodiversity. It’s not just about preventing harm. It’s about building regenerative solutions that uplift people and planet together.

3. Repairing the Grid, Restoring the Future: Titas Gas Leak Repair Project – Greater Dhaka Region

By finding and fixing methane leaks across an aging urban gas network, this project reduces emissions, improves public safety, and modernizes infrastructure.

  • Climate Win: Cuts 3–4 million tonnes of CO₂e per year from methane leakage
  • Community Win: Prevents gas-related explosions and improves air quality in dense neighborhoods
  • Equity Win: Keeps energy affordable for 2.8 million customers while training local tech teams and reducing waste

Why we love it: It reminds us that big impact can come from small fixes, and that infrastructure upgrades can drive climate justice, safety, and efficiency all at once.

One Step Toward a Regenerative Future

Offsetting our footprint is a milestone worth celebrating, but we know the journey doesn’t end here. Every solar panel, every blower door test, and every new building standard we support brings us closer to a world powered by clean energy, energy-efficiency, thoughtful climate action, and stronger communities. As a North Carolina B Corp and clean energy leader, we believe it’s our responsibility to walk the talk, and then some.

Thank you for being part of the movement. Together, we’re building a brighter future, one solution at a time.
