Mecklenburg County has hired Southern Energy Management to install solar thermal systems on five buildings in Charlotte.
Mecklenburg County will place solar water heaters at five buildings, including 64 solar collectors that will go on the roof of Mecklenburg County Jail North.
A federal stimulus grant will pay for the $634,000 project, which is expected to avoid the use of 1.5 million cubic feet of natural gas a year. Southern Energy Management, a solar power and energy efficiency firm with a Charlotte office, started installing the systems in February and will finish this month.
