Apartments in Historic Wilkesboro School Dedicated

SEM helped this affordable housing project for seniors and persons with disabilities earn its ENERGY STAR label.

Senior citizens and those with disabilities now have a new housing option – Historic Wilkesboro School.

The 41-apartment complex was officially dedicated on Friday.

“We almost lost it to a parking lot, but the historic renovation of Historic Wilkesboro School is now complete” said E. G. “Ned” Fowler, Northwestern Housing Enterprises, Incorporated (NHE) vice president and CEO. “This wonderful 1937 WPA frame and brick school building one block off Main Street in Historic Downtown Wilkesboro has been revitalized and transformed into 41 Energy Star affordable apartments with amenities for seniors and persons with disabilities.”

The work was made possible through the continuing United States Congressional and North Carolina General Assembly support for private investment through housing and historic tax credits coupled with government housing voucher subsidies.

“The residents are excited to be here, having completed their working careers in the area and now living downtown on limited incomes” Fowler continued.

More than 200 participants of the project were in attendance including the leadership of Wilkes County, Wilkesboro, North Wilkesboro, the North Carolina Housing Finance Agency, Federal Home Loan Bank of Atlanta, Branch Banking and Trust Company, Community Affordable Housing Equity Corporation, Blanco, Tackabery and Matamoros, P.A., the U. S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, Southern Energy Management, MdM Historical Consultants, Tise-Kiester Architects, Weaver Cooke Construction and others.
