Overview of the International Builders Show

Last month the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) held the International Builders Show (IBS) in Orlando, FL. Hosted at the Orange County Convention Center, the International Builders Show is the largest light construction show in the world. Every year, the Show attracts more than 60,000 visitors from over 100 countries.

This year we sent our CEO, Bob Kingery, and Green Building Specialist, Jamie Hager down to Orlando to check it out. Both Bob and Jamie were tasked to scope out the industry’s latest products, materials, and technologies.

High Performance and Green Building

Our team went in and focused on products that are valuable for high performance and green homes. Attending the show is so valuable for Southern Energy Management because we get the opportunity to ask manufacturers tons of questions. Unlike a customer service hotline, we were able to speak with product designers, engineers, and developers. This allowed us to get technical and really understand their products.

Seeing new technology in action and being ahead of the curve is our secret sauce. Seeing where the industry is going helps us understand which products will allow homes to be even more efficient. As a result, we’re able to help guide builders and homeowners on products that will allow them to save money on their energy bills.

Hot Products from the International Builders Show

After walking miles of the show floor, both Bob and Jamie were able to identify some of the best products for high performance and green building. Below is a quick overview on some noteworthy products that can make a large impact on a home’s comfort and efficiency.

Taco Inc, has developed a number of Domestic Hot Water Recirculation products that use hot water wisely based off of the behavior of the family within the home. For example, their SmartPlus model learns and records the family’s hot water usage pattern for the first 7 days. Afterwards, it repeats that pattern for the next next 7 days providing instant hot water only when it is needed. If the family is not present for an extended period of time, SmartPlus will kick into vacation mode. While on vacation mode, SmartPlus will stop pumping hot water until the family returns and then will resume hot water again. Taco Inc, has a few models that cater to a users specific domestic hot water needs.
