Charlotte NC - Residential Solar Back-up Systems

Clover, SC and Waxhaw, NC

These two residential solar photovoltaic systems were recently installed by our team in Charlotte. The triangular shape of the first installation -a 2.8-kW solar system - sets it apart from the typical grid-style array. The system shown in the second photo serves as an example of a solar PV system approved by the HOA in a new development - it can be done!

Some of the electricity generated by these systems is stored to serve as a battery back-up in the event of an outage, giving the homes' residents added security and energy independence. The remaining electricity generated flows into the local utility grid, adding to the local community's supply of clean, renewable energy.

Ringenburg Residence, Chapel Hill, NC Energy Star Verification, Solar Thermal & Solar PV

Southern Energy Management worked with Green Builder John Hartley (www.hartleyconstruction.com) and the Ringenburgs to design and build the Ringenburg family’s dream high-performance home. SEM provided energy consulting and installed a 7.2 kW solar PV system as well as a solar hot water system. SEM’s consulting and renewable energy solutions earned the Ringenburg home a HERS rating of 8 – the lowest home energy rating we’ve seen to-date. The home will eliminate over 27,000 lbs/year of air pollutants (CO2, SO2, NOx) from being emitted into the environment by conventional power plants. (A case study of this project can be viewed online here: http://www.southern-energy.com/files/SEMCaseStudyRingenburg-12.4.07.pdf)

Benneck Energy Star Cabin (Clayton, NC)

SEM installed an 8 collector solar thermal system for the Benneck Cabin. This system heats the water for a 328 gallon storage tank. It has 2 heat exchanger coils: one for the domestic hot water and a second for a uni-chiller tie-in for the solar space heating system. SEM also did the duct design, efficiency consulting and performance testing for the building’s Energy Star certification.

Holzworth Residence

Holzworth Residence (Durham, NC) Don Holzworth wanted to sell power back on the grid and wanted a battery back up on his new home built by Bost Custom Homes. SEM installed his 3 kW system on his new dream home. We also set him up as a Commercial power generator with the NC Utilities Commission so that he could sell power to the grid and receive the NC Green Power Subsidy of $0.18/kW. This home won the “Gold” of all home on the 2006 Parade of Homes.
